Museo Nacional de Antropología

Opened in 1964 on the edge of Chapultepec Park, this is the largest and most visited museum in Mexico — and one of the most important anthropology museums in the world. The collection spans epochs of Mexican history, from fossils and pre-Hispanic artifacts to the iconic Aztec Sun Stone (the calendar stone) and the massive Coatlicue monolith in the Mexica hall. The Teotihuacán and Maya halls are equally impressive, filled with original pieces that bring entire civilizations into sharp focus.

The building itself — designed by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez — centers on a dramatic courtyard fountain, and the layout is intuitive: ground floor for archaeology, upper floor for ethnography. Plan at least three to four hours if you want to see it properly; there are over twenty exhibition halls. Start with the Introducción a la Antropología room to the right of the main entrance for context before diving into the rest. Admission is free on Sundays for Mexican nationals and residents with ID; weekdays are less crowded than weekends.
